Micka has literally grown up on at Blue Ribbon Raceway. The late Jenny Simpson, would pack up Micka & her son Dylan from about the age of 4 and take them out to watch the speedway. From the age of 12, Micka started nagging for his own car to race – which didn’t happen. So he volunteered at the track until he turned 18 and begun to race.
This is Micka’s second car. The first, a XF Falcon Street Stock was written off on the track. The wreck had to be craned off the track, they attempted to rebuild it but it was too far gone.
Name doesn’t ring a bell? No? Kathryn isn’t new to racing, this is her 11th year. Up until a few months ago she was Kathryn Wilken. Kathryn made sure she had the race car mechanic work secured for life by marrying her mechanic, Brendan, who she met 10 years ago at the Blue Ribbon Raceway.
Redda is a little busy on race night. He jumps from his V8 Truck into his Street Stock EL Falcon and goes again. He started racing with Richard Bansemer in a TE Cortina as a junior at age 17, and obviously loves racing because he has now raced for half his life!
This is new to Steve. Not Speedway, but the Wingless Sprint!
Up until just before christmas, Steve was in a 3 Litre Sedan. I’m told these are a step up from the Limited Sportsman but closer related to a Sprint Car. They have big fat tyres and the modern suspension used by Sprint Cars. The engines are limited to a stock Commodore V6 and all the cars in the Wingless Sprint class are pretty much the same. So winning comes down to driver and set up of the car.
Jock Baker is all smiles. I met him in the workshop and up high is a Trophy Cabinet that is full. He tells me he has a pool room at home that has quite a collection as well.
Jock’s pretty good at this speedway thing. He is the current Victorian Title holder for the Limited Sportsman class. Number 1 in Victoria and Number 2 in South Australia, due to a mistake that put Jock into the wall, but he still bounced back to come Second.
